Search Tips

To search for a particular name:

  1. Enter a single last name only in the name field.
    • (Example: Johnson)
  2. Choose the number of results to return
  3. Click the ‘Name Only' button.
  4. The form will return only documents with deceased name field for Johnson.

or

  1. Enter the first and last name separated by 'AND' in the name field.
    • (Example: Mary AND Johnson)
  2. Choose the number of results to return
  3. Click the 'Name Only‘ button.
  4. The form will return only documents that contain Mary AND Johnson in the name field.

or

  1. Enter multiple first names and a last name separated by 'AND' and 'OR' in the name field.
    • (Example: Johnson AND Mary OR Margaret OR Meg)
  2. Choose the number of results to return
  3. Click the ‘Full Record' button.
  4. The form will return only documents that contain the name Johnson and (Mary or Margaret or Meg) somewhere in the text.

To search for a particular name and year:

  1. Enter a single last name only in the name field.
    • (Example: Johnson)
  2. Enter a year in the date field.
    • (Example: 1971)
  3. Choose the number of results to return
  4. Click the 'Name & Date' button.
  5. The form will return only documents with deceased name field for Johnson and date of death field of 1971.

To search for a particular year:

  1. Enter a year in the date field.
    • (Example: 1971)
  2. Choose the number of results to return
  3. Click the ‘Date Only’ button.
  4. The form will return only documents with date of death field of 1971

To search for a particular month and year:

  1. Enter a month and year in the date field.
    • (Example: January AND 1971)
  2. Choose the number of results to return
  3. Click the ‘Date Only' button.
  4. The form will return only documents with date of death field of January 1971
  1. Enter a month and year in the Name or Text field.
    • (Example: January AND 1971)
  2. Choose the number of results to return
  3. Click the ‘Full Record' button.
  4. The form will return all documents with January and 1971 somewhere in the text.

To search a date range separate years or months by including each year or month with an 'AND/OR' boolean.

  • Example: 1949 OR 1950 OR 1951 OR 1952 will return all obituaries from 1949 through 1952 inclusive because you are requesting documents that contain at least one of these keywords..
  • Example: 1967 AND 1968 AND 1969 will probably not return anything because you are requiring all year keywords to be in a document.
  • Example: January OR February OR March AND 1968 will return all documents from 1-1968 to 3-1968 inclusive because you are requesting documents that contain at least one of the month keyword and are required to have 1968.
  • Example: Joe AND Joseph AND Johnson will return only documents that contain all three keywords.
  • Example: Johnson AND Joe or Joseph will return all documents that contain Johnson and either Joe or Joseph.

Using a wild card ' * ' in a search. Not sure of the spelling of a name or wish to search a decade?

  • Example: You want to look up the name WOJCIECHOWSKI, but are unsure of the spelling. Enter W*ski in the name field and search.
  • Example: You want to look up all names that start with "Ab". Enter Ab* in the name field and search.
  • Example: You want to look up all "1960's". Enter 196* in the date field and search.
  • Example: You want to look up all "Wojciechowski's from the 1960's". Enter 196* in the date field and enter W*ski in the name field. Then click 'Name & Date'.
